Music lovers
will find Berlin a feast for their ears. The city’s trendy credentials
ensure that almost every touring act, whether from Germany or abroad,
will book a date in one of the capital’s numerous nightclubs or arenas.
For those who prefer classical music or opera Berlin has more
than enough to offer. Ideological competition between the former East
and West regimes was of special benefit for culture vultures and the
city is now home to three separate opera houses and over a half dozen
orchestras.
The world renowned Berliner Philharmoniker,
founded in 1882 and now led by artistic director Sir Simon Rattle,
performs since 1963 in architect Hans Scharoun’s striking yellow
Philharmonie on Potsdamer Platz. Across town the Konzerthausorchester
Berlin, formed in 1952 by the East German government performs in a 19th
century concert house on the Gendarmenmarkt in Mitte. Meanwhile, opera
enthusiasts can enjoy the Deutsche Oper, founded in 1911 (the only
opera house in what was once West Berlin), the Komische Oper or Berlin
State Opera - originally founded to serve the Prussian royal house in
1742.
